As our contemporary society undergoes a clear shift in the acceptance of homosexuality, transgender individuals, and the increasing recognition and even official documentation of non-binary identities, a new phenomenon is emerging: the fusion of technology and humanity. Cyborgs already exist and extend far beyond what many people often don’t consider, such as the pacemaker. There are known cases of people who have had a (healthy) body part amputated to replace it with advanced technology.
Interfering in the human body to develop new abilities, the world of biohacking, is not limited to the mechanical part of our body. Synthetic biology is involved in inducing mutations at the DNA level to create the ‘superhuman’. This will lead to the emergence of a new ‘race’ on Earth, reigniting societal debates. The question remains: what is morally acceptable, and how do these developments fit within our societal values and norms? Ethics will have to grapple with these superhuman creations and must help us maintain respect for every life form, regardless of strength, ability, and intelligence. Prepare yourself, it has already begun and is progressing as rapidly as the recent developments in AI.
